How To Check Your Car’s Oil
What would be your answer if I ask you ‘what is blood of a car’? Your answer would probably be its oil, right? Oil is the blood to a car that cools its engine down, as well as removes the pollutants that enter into the engine. Therefore, it is very important to check your car’s oil on a regular basis, say once in a month in order to make sure that everything is fine.
How will you check the oil? Well, you need to open the compartment containing the engine or the hood. Then, you need to locate the “dipstick”, that locates right next to the engine, if you have a wet-sump engine or next to the oil cap if you have a dry-sump engine.
After that remove the dipstick and wipe it off with a rag or paper-towel. And insert it back in the engine and then pull it out again. Now, you will have to look for a few things:
- Color: Notice the colour of the oil. Normally, the oil is a golden, or honey color when it is new and clean, and if it is darker that means it is getting closer to the end of its life. Therefore, if it seems like it is more black than gold, you will need consider an oil change. You can also test it by putting a drop of oil on your fingernail. If you can easily see your nail, your oil is fine or need not consider an oil change.
- Location: Also notice the where the oil is in relation to the markings on the dipstick. If it is under the “MAX” line, you need to add some oil to the tank for back up. And if it is under the “MIN” line, add oil immediately. Because, it is very dangerous for your engine to run with little oil.
