Must Know Things Before Buying a Used Car

If you don’t have the required budget to buy a new car you can obviously opt for a used car. But there are a few things that you must know before buying a used car. Make sure the engine, transmission, suspension, brakes and fluids are in good condition. Here are some of the basic checks before purchasing a used car.

  • Examine the condition of the belt and hoses.
  • Inspect the parking brake operation on a hill.
  • Check for any wear-tear on the brake pedal.
  • Analyze the condition of the exhaust system.
  • Make sure to check the shocks and springs of the vehicle.
  • Examine the working condition of the lights, wipers, horn and seat belts.
  • Examine the working order of all the blowers, if there’s an air conditioner installed in the car.
  • To identify whether a trailer hitch has been installed make sure to check the underneath of your vehicle.

In case, you’re unsure about any of the above mentioned checks it is highly recommended to have the car assessed by a professional mechanic before buying it. Once he has accessed the car make sure to ask for a list of the following:

  1. Immediate repairs that the car requires and an estimate of the cost of parts and labor.
  2. An estimate on the repair that the car may need in the next year.

Usually, this inspection should take less than an hour by a professional mechanic. Although the price incurred on the price of labor for an hour, is comparatively less with the unknown cost of needed repairs. If possible ask for a service record from the seller to get a better idea about the vehicle. Keep in mind that a good car is one that has been maintained well and does not need a lot of work. After you’ve collected all the information calculate the expense and then decide whether the car is worth it.
