Why De-cluttering is a good idea

Many of us stock and pile possessions, to the degree that their house becomes a mess and it becomes difficult to locate where things are. As ‘letting go’ of possessions is analogous to ‘losing’ something, we we are caught in a double bind. Our lives become filled with material objects that we are compelled to keep.

We fiercely hold on to material possessions because they offer a certain security. In the Western world possessions have become institutionalized to the degree that bigger, better, and more is wanted not because of genuine need, but for merely having everything better.

While the ownership of ’stuff’ does feed your ego and distract you from the mundane aspects of life, this is only temporary. Possessions do not satisfy the deep inner longings that everyone has for fulfillment and satisfaction. It is only when you let go of them are you able to recognize the emotional hold that your possessions have over you.

It is common to hold on to material possessions because we are attached to them or fear the emptiness we will feel if we get rid of them Giving away souvenirs may seem like you are losing the memory of that experience in your life. You might think that your loved ones will feel hurt if you donate the gifts they gave you to charity. It is natural to convince yourself that unused possessions might come in handy someday.

However, when all space is filled with objects, there is no room for anything new to enter your life. Your collection of belongings can both “protect” you from the uncertainties of an unknown future while keeping you stuck in the past.

Remember as we emotional baggage it is difficult to let go to create change or obtain peace of mind. Holding on to no longer needed possessions implies that you are holding on to pain, anger, and resentment, you may have experienced.

When you make a conscious decision to fill your personal space with only the objects that you need or like, your energy level will soar. Clearing your personal space can lead to mental clarity and better focus. As you learn to have a more pragmatic relationship with objects, positive changes will transpire, and you will have space to create the life that you desire without the burden of the old holding you back. Likewise, when you allow yourself to let go of possessions you will also allow yourself to let go of old emotions.
